Tesla’s Solar Roof Sets Musk’s Grand Unification into Motion

On 5/11/17, reports were published in Bloomberg and ELP that Tesla has opened an online registration site for customers to start signing up for its new solar roof. Two types of shingles will be available soon; two others will come in 2018. The two articles have different price examples for the roof’s cost, but plugging in a 1500-square-foot house in central Austin gave us a cost of about $38K. Not an insignificant amount! It does not include the $7K cost of the Powerwall battery and the federal credit for a total net cost over a 30-year period of $5-6K. “The roof is guaranteed for the life of the home, which is longer than the 20-year lifespan for a typical, non-solar roof, [CEO Elon] Musk said. It has gone through the same hail, fire and wind testing that normal roofs endure.”
