A Guide to the Debate over Closing Nuclear Plants

On 3/6/17, GreenTech Media published a look at the debate over the closing of nuclear plants, noting a renewed support for such plants by certain legislators in spite of market changes. “Wholesale electricity prices are at historic lows, threatening the underlying economics and fate of America’s existing nuclear fleet, just as many facilities are up for re-licensing. GTM’s Julia Pyper recently chronicled the struggles and potential wholesale market changes that may help these plants post-election. This leaves policymakers with tough choices on if – or how – they should intervene to save these plants.” From calls for re-regulation or added revenue streams, some states are trying to save their nuclear plants, while others – for example New York – have agreed to shutter them. But the consideration of the issues involved is more complex than just “close them all” or “save them at all costs.”
