Last week, University of Texas’ Energy Institute held its annual UT Energy Week. Attended by nearly 1,000 people in 2016, this year’s conference consisted of a series “of events sponsored by numerous academic departments and student organizations across campus…. In addition to the main UT Energy Week sessions held Tuesday through Friday, there were several affiliated events taking place in association with the conference, including tours of the campus’ renowned power plant system and micro-grid, and research facilities within School of Architecture and the Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering.” The event concluded on Friday, with the Second Annual Symposium, organized by the KBH Center for Energy, Law & Business and entitled “The Future of the Oil and Gas Industry: Peak Oil or Peak Demand – What’s the Horizon?” The symposium speakers included U.S. Rep. Joe Barton; Barry Smitherman, former PUCT and RRC Chairman; and Jack Gerard, the CEO of the American Petroleum Institute.

Among the topics discussed during the Energy Week were President Trump’s energy policy, grid of the future, cybersecurity, grid resiliency, and integrating renewables into the grid. During one session on Wednesday, a four-member panel discussed evolving market designs in California, Texas, New York, and Mexico, with the emphasis on distributed energy resources, renewables, and changing demand side. The speakers agreed that a lot of targeted planning will be required before all of the new technology can be effectively and reliably integrated into the electric markets.
