Texas House Rep. Anchia Facing Backlash from Electric Companies

On 3/8/15, the Dallas Morning News wrote about Rep. Anchia’s House Bill 489, which would place consumer fees for using smart thermostats under state regulatory rules, and the unexpected backlash his office is receiving about the bill from some lobbyists. The bill is scheduled for a hearing on Wed., 3/11/15. The author of the article writes that “Anchia’s bill is in reaction to a Dallas Morning News Watchdog column I wrote in 2013 showing how Plano resident Tamara Galbraith was charged $495…when she cancelled her smart thermostat rental.” He also posted the entire “unreadable” contract for the rental. The bill, however, seems to be driving “the Texas electric industry “crazy.” The Watchdog’s legislative package for 2015 may be found at “Watchdog: This week is legislature’s last chance for electricity reform.”
