On 4/17/17, SNL Energy reported that “U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry has asked for an evaluation of the nation’s electric grid due to what he described as concerns by experts over an ‘erosion of critical baseload resources,’ or always-available power generation capacity supplied largely by fossil fuel plants. In a memorandum to his chief of staff Brian McCormack, Perry asked for a plan to be developed by April 19 for a 60-day study that would examine critical long-term grid reliability issues.” Secretary Perry expressed concerns over conventional power plants, and asked that the study also look at wholesale power markets and whether “enough value is being given to the reliability provided by baseload power, because of the benefits those power plants bring to the reliable supply of electricity… ‘A reliable and resilient electric system is essential to protecting public health and fostering economic growth and job creation,’” Perry noted. The memo is posted here. More also at UtilityDIVE.  Additionally, as nuclear subsidies have “sown fear” of lower power prices among independent generators, FERC has scheduled a call for a technical conference on May 1 and 2.
