On 3/6/17, SNL Energy reported that “[l]awmakers want to conduct more oversight of the Federal Power Act and the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, but those reviews — and potential reforms to the laws — are taking a backseat to other legislative priorities. Congress has paid more attention to the FPA lately, following two recent Supreme Court rulings involving the line between federal and state power market jurisdiction. Some industry members also hope PURPA can be modified to grant more respect to local regulation of electric power. House lawmakers launched a review of federal power laws in 2016, but momentum on that effort has slowed as Congress seeks to work with the new Trump administration on bigger-ticket items such as healthcare and tax reform.” The rest of the article looks at the probability of any future reforms.
