ERCOT Issues Paper on Distributed Energy Resources

On 3/23/17, ERCOT published a new paper on Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) – Reliability Impacts and Recommended Changes. It states that, in competitive areas, “nearly 900 Megawatts (MW) of Distributed Generation – ranging from large fossil fuel-fired reciprocating units to small rooftop solar systems – were interconnected as of Dec. 31, 2015. An estimated additional 200-plus MW are deployed in the Non-Opt-In Entity (NOIE) territories.” The paper provides details on the challenges posed by the growth of such resources, “and suggests ways for ERCOT and stakeholders to collaborate on addressing these issues going forward” to ensure a continued and reliable bulk-power grid.
