DOE Nominee Rick Perry Sparks Speculation

Former Texas Governor Rick Perry – to some an unexpected nominee for the Secretary of Energy – is sparking quite a few news stories. An detailed article at UtilityDIVE looks at how he would run the Department of Energy, and quotes from supporters who believe that he helped the state’s wind industry grow – an indication that he might continue to address climate change and also support other technologies. Karl Rabago, a former PUCT Commissioner, is more skeptical, remembering that Perry was a vocal coal supporter.

Yesterday, Pro Publica wrote about “Rick Perry’s Texas Giveaways,” noting that he “doled out billions in grants and tax incentives for corporations while governor of Texas. One $30 million grant went to an energy group that turned out to be a phantom.” Some question his qualifications for the post, observing that though “he governed a state rich in fossil fuels and wind energy, Perry has far less experience than President Obama’s two energy secretaries, both physicists, in the department’s primary work, such as tending the nuclear-weapons stockpile, handling nuclear waste and carrying out advanced scientific research. That’s not to mention, of course, that Perry four years ago called for doing away with the entire department.”

And a couple of days ago, The Hill considered why Tillerson and Perry may fuel the uranium and nuclear sectors. The publication warns that, while Trump, Tillerson, and Perry have stated that they generally support nuclear energy, they also “need to understand just how dependent on foreign uranium our nuclear sector really is – truly a national security issue.”
