On 3/22/17, SNL Energy reported that a “A Senate committee has approved bipartisan legislation to develop a new regulatory framework for advanced reactors, boost nuclear energy innovation, and reform the U.S. Department of Energy’s management of the national stockpile of excess uranium. The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works approved an amended Senate Bill 512 in a 18-3 vote on March 22 and sent the Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act to the Senate floor…. The committee also approved an amendment to S. 512 that includes several stakeholder-backed changes, including new incentives for private investment in research and development of advanced nuclear technology, and support for a licensing process that favors making nuclear fuel rods in current and future reactors safer than today’s existing fleet. In addition, the bill seeks to improve both uranium regulation and the transparency and accountability of how the DOE disposes of and sells excess uranium without harming U.S. producers.”
